Kimmel Holds Off Stewart For Win

Frank Kimmel may have had a little extra motivation to record his eighth ARCA RE/MAX Series win of the season on Monday: beat the Winston Cup regulars who had invaded for just one race.

It seems that motivation paid off as Kimmel held of NASCAR veteran Tony Stewart in the waning laps of the Federated Auto Parts Southern Illinois 100 at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds to score another victory.

"What an incredible day," Kimmel said. "I was driving it as hard as I could there at the end; I couldn't give it anymore. But what a thrill to win here at DuQuoin, and to beat Tony Stewart and all the rest. Tony was a little faster there at the end; I'm just glad he raced me clean. But what a show for the fans."

Stewart, who was actually Kimmel’s teammate for the event, started from the pole position after recording a new one-lap track record during qualifying. He and Kimmel battled hard all day, the difference coming in Stewart’s two pit stops to Kimmel’s one.

In the end, however, it all came down to one final charge from Stewart. On the final lap, the Indiana native made a run at Kimmel but fell short by half a car length.

“I had so much fun out there today," Stewart said. "We just want to thank the car owner Larry Clement for the opportunity, and all the guys from Frank's (Kimmel) crew who helped put this whole thing together. Now I can see why those guys (Kimmel's) win so many races over here, and why they're champions.”

Bill Baird finished third with Ken Schrader, Joe Cooksey, Tom Eriksen, Andy Belmont, Jason Jarrett, Andy Petree and Brent Glastetter rounded out the Top 10.

Early in the race, Kimmel and Stewart exchanged the lead several times before Kimmel finally took over for good on Lap 39. With the win, Kimmel extends his championship points lead to 1,040 over Jarrett. Belmont sits third in the standings, 1,145 behind the leader.

Nine cautions slowed the event on the 1-mile clay oval for a total of 37 laps.

The ARCA RE/MAX Series returns to action this Sunday at Salem Speedway in Salem, Ind.
