NASCAR Regulars Try ARCA

As if Tony Stewart hasn’t already tried too many kinds of racing this season, the NASCAR Winston Cup star plans to compete in the ARCA RE/MAX Series on Labor Day weekend.

Stewart and fellow NASCAR players Ken Schrader and Andy Petree have filed entries for the ARCA Southern Illinois 100 at DuQuoin State Fairgrounds on Sept. 3.

"It's all contingent on what happens at Darlington the day before," said ARCA public relations-media director Don Radebaugh. "If the Sunday afternoon Mountain Dew Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway gets weather or rains out, then that may prevent them from being able to come. But if all goes well at Darlington, then we expect to see all three at DuQuoin.”

Schrader will drive his own Federated Auto Parts Pontiac on the 1-mile dirt track. He has 22-career ARCA starts to his credit and eight career wins, including the PFG Lester 150 at the new Nashville Superspeedway in April.

Although this will be Stewart’s first attempt at ARCA, he will not be new to the track. The former open-wheel star has competed on the DuQuoin dirt in a USAC Silver Bullet car. Stewart is expected to be in a car fielded by current ARCA owner Larry Clement, who also owns the car driven by current ARCA championship leader Frank Kimmel.

Petree, who fields the Winston Cup cars driven by Joe Nemechek and Bobby Hamilton, is expected to race in a car from his existing stable of Chevrolets.

“None of this would have been possible without the help of Ken Schrader, who was extremely instrumental in making it happen,” Radebaugh said. “He's done a lot for the series through the years, and he continues to play a significant role."

Others who are expected to compete in this year’s Southern Illinois 100 include four-time and defending DuQuoin winner Billy Thomas, 1999 ARCA champion Bill Baird, veteran Bob Strait in a Bill Hendren-owned entry and 1988 champion Tracy Leslie.

Current ARCA front-runners Frank Kimmel, Andy Belmont, Jason Jarrett and others are also expected to compete.

The Southern Illinois 100 at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds begins at 1 p.m. (ET) Sept. 3.
